Amsterdam study: ECCS/ERS predictions do not fit well
In a study of 1112 males and 1345 females who had no respiratory symptoms (smokers and non-smokers) findings on FEV1 and FVC were as follows (mean and standard deviation):
| Index | males | females |
| FVC % predicted | 108 ± 16 | 117 ± 18 |
| FEV1 % predicted | 102 ± 18 | 108 ± 18 |
Smoking affects pulmonary function unfavorably, in particular in males. Taking that into account the findings in Amsterdam agree well with those in asymptomatic nonsmokers in another large-scale study of a representative sample of the population of Vlaardingen (urban) and Vlagtwedde (rural).
