Prejunctional and postjunctional factors in bronchial responsiveness

The tight junctions between epithelial cells may be abnormally permeable. Similarly the metabolic function of epithelial cells may be diminished, so that they release fewer endopeptidases or less "epithelium derived relaxant factor". Epithelial cells are also capable of producing cytokines and mediators which attract cells which enhance the inflammatory process.
