Increased
inflammatory cellular infiltrate, vascular engorgement and plasma
exudation lead to swelling of mucosa and submucosa and a resultant
increase in airways resistance. Smooth muscle contraction now leads
to a greater increase in airways resistance secondary to the increase
in the airway wall thickness internal to the airway smooth muscle.
