A patient has produced 3 flow-volume curves. The FEV1 associated with the flow-volume curve with the largest sum of FEV1 and FVC should be used to assess the patient’s lung function. |

The sum criterion is applied to select one single flow-volume curve from amongst three technically satisfactory FVC maneuvers. It is also used in selecting the FEF25-75% = MMEF. The FEV1 used to assess a subject’s ventilatory function, however, is selected on the basis of other criteria. Was each FVC maneuver performed correctly?
